Prof. Christopher Y. H. Chao


Dr. Christopher Chao is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and also Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He is also Director of the Building Energy Research Center at HKUST. Dr. Chao’s research covers various topics in thermal and environmental engineering such as contaminant transport in indoor environments, advanced cooling and refrigeration, and combustion. He has published over 100 journal papers and is Associate Editor and Editorial Board member of various international journals such as Journal of Indoor and Built Environment, Indoor Air, Building and Simulation, etc. Dr. Chao is currently supervising over 25 research students and staff members in both applied and basic research. He received a number of international research and best paper awards in the area of Built Environment, and is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (FASME), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (FCIBSE), the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE). He is also a member of the Academy of Fellows of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) in which he has also been serving as a board member. He is a Vice President of the International Conference of Indoor Air Quality and Climate in 2014. Dr. Chao graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a first class honors in Mechanical Engineering (1988) and obtained Masters (1992) and PhD (1994) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley.
